What’s a person to do, when the client has a creative vision? Make it happen for them! Our client had the idea to diecut not a standard window on the cover of this vacation planner, but make it a bear. A bear that is open to see the beauty of the Yosemite National Park.
The Challenge: Keep the fine details of the bear shaped window. A standard die would not allow for the detail in the face and the paws of the bear.
The Solution: Laser Cutting. Nothing compares to the intricacy of laser-cut paper.
The DOME Account Manager contacted our partner who crafts the dies we use to die cut in-house. After reviewing the design details, it was decided not to use a standard diecutting method because of the details in the bears face and paws. We then approached our partner who specializes in laser-cut paper. The process began by reviewing the art and the paper. In this case, there were no adjustments that needed to be made to the bear image, but the paper needed to be reviewed for the burn quality. (In laser cutting there is a slightly burned edge to the paper. A paper test is recommended to make sure the paper chosen does not burn too easily.) The selected stock was sent to be burn tested and then reviewed. The client decided the burn was acceptable and what side of the paper they would prefer the darkest burn marks to be. Sometimes the heavier burn side can be very beneficial to the design. In this case, the inside front cover was printed with a parchment design and the burn blended nicely in to the art.
The Outcome: An outstanding Vacation Planner and another happy client.
“We love our travel planner. The quality of the printing is outstanding and our clients are always impressed with the die-cut cover. It is a really impressive piece. Thanks, DOME!”
